I really dislike the buzzword “personal brand”, almost as much as I dislike “cloud” (really, you have a computer that is connected to the internet too?). Personal Branding is just the faddish word for “reputation”… that’s a word that I know has staying power and won’t date itself quickly. It’s been around a while.
All of us make mistakes and dent and ding up our brand. When we make those mistakes, it’s easy to think that re-establishing our personal brand will be impossible, but most people will give you a second chance. Here’s how to make sure you take advantage.
Be honest
People like to know that they can count on what we say. It’s easy to serve diplomacy in lieu of bad news, especially to your boss and other authority figures… but real decision makers and true leaders need people that will give them straight answers – and they’re tough enough to take it.
Do the Right Thing (Even When No One Is Looking)
This is a simple one that we make complex. There are good things and bad things. Do the good things. Don’t worry about who sees you doing them.
Be Positive
I had a friend once who was always in a good mood. He liked to joke around and he was fun to be around. He had a hardy chuckle and threw his head back when he laughed. People liked him. He saw the possibilities and what good there was around him. It drove me nuts at the time!
It took a few years to figure out that you never know whose day you’re brightening and that none of us have the right to darken anyone else’s. I wish I could remember that more often, especially when driving around here… seriously, is there ANY test to get a drivers license in this state?
Do What You Believe
People may not like what you do, but they can’t argue about your integrity when you do it, if it’s what you believe. Often there are consequences for doing what we believe and its good to be cognizant.
This one makes it easier to sleep at night too!
Do What You Say You’ll Do
A friend of mine once told me that the only determinant he used in deciding who to associate with was whether the person did what they said they would do.
Help others
The least likely person will be in a position to help you one day. When that day comes will they be likely to help you? Respect everyone and help others.
Good luck and let us know your thoughts below!
